OBS Face Swap on Windows: Window Capture and Setup

Last updated:

Start a live face swap in your browser, capture and crop the result in OBS on Windows, then make a test recording and fix a black or frozen preview.

OBS Face Swap on Windows: Window Capture and Setup

For OBS face swap on Windows, start the live effect in the browser, then add that window to OBS Studio as Window Capture. Crop the source to the processed video and play back a short recording before you stream or open a call. Live Face Swap generates the effect, and OBS captures and outputs the scene.

For Prism Face Swap, the studio now offers Open OBS output, a separate result window that keeps page controls outside the feed. Use the current output-window guide for that route. The steps below remain a manual workbench-window capture option.

1. Get a moving face swap result in your browser

  1. Open the Live Face Swap workspace in a dedicated Chrome or Edge window on the same Windows computer as OBS Studio.
  2. Choose Face Swap, select a preset or a reference portrait you have permission to use, and sign in. Select an AI Engine and review its credit rate.
  3. Click Open camera and allow camera access. Once your local camera preview is moving, click Face Swap and confirm to start generation. Live generation uses credits.
  4. Wait for the Live face swap result and move your head to check that the processed picture updates. Use Expand preview if you need more room for the result. Keep the workspace tab selected and the window open and unminimized.

2. Add the result as a Window Capture source

  1. Open OBS Studio. In Scenes, click + and create a scene for the live result.
  2. In Sources, click + → Window Capture. In its properties, use the Window dropdown to select the Chrome or Edge window showing the result. Start with Capture Method → Automatic. If you want to hide the pointer, turn off Capture Cursor.
  3. Click OK and move in front of the webcam. Make sure the same processed view is moving in the OBS preview.

Window Capture uses the browser window where the session is already running. OBS's Browser source opens its own page. Pasting the homepage URL there opens a separate workspace. OBS Window Capture options · OBS Browser Source

3. Crop the window so only the AI result is visible

  1. Select the Window Capture source in the OBS preview. Hold Alt and drag the edges inward to crop. For exact adjustments, press Ctrl+E to open Edit Transform and enter the crop values.
  2. Trim away the browser frame, page controls, and the My camera inset. If the inset overlaps the result, crop past the entire inset from the top or right. Expand the workspace preview first if you need a larger area to work with.
  3. Move and resize the cropped source to fit the scene. Check all four edges for the original camera, account details, and browser notifications. Lock the source in Sources once the crop is set. Recheck it if you resize the browser window. OBS crop and transform controls

4. Make a short test recording in OBS

  1. If you want voice in the recording, speak and watch the Audio Mixer. Use Mic/Aux if it already receives your microphone. Otherwise, add Audio Input Capture and select the microphone. Use one active copy of the mic to avoid echo.
  2. Click Start Recording in the OBS Controls dock. Move and speak for a few seconds, then click Stop Recording. In Studio Mode, check the Program pane before recording.
  3. Open File → Show Recordings and play the new file. Check that the swap keeps moving, the original camera stays out of frame, and the audio matches your mouth movement if you recorded your voice. To change the save location, use Settings → Output → Recording Path. OBS audio sources · OBS recording settings

Why is OBS Window Capture black or frozen?

  • The browser result is black or frozen too. Start with the workspace. Confirm the camera preview works, then check that the live session has started and the AI result is updating. Check the browser's camera permission if the local preview is blank.
  • The browser works, but OBS is blank. Restore the browser if it was minimized and keep the workspace tab selected. Open the Window Capture properties and reselect the correct window. If Automatic still gives a black screen, try the Windows capture option in Capture Method, then try BitBlt if available. Check for movement after each change. OBS capture methods on Windows
  • The source is visible, but the recording shows a blank or wrong scene. Check that the capture source is visible in the scene you are recording. In Studio Mode, transition the intended scene to Program. If you just changed the window or crop, review the scene and make another short recording.

When to start OBS Virtual Camera

Use Start Virtual Camera to make the checked OBS scene available as a webcam in apps such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Discord. Select OBS Virtual Camera and your microphone separately in the receiving app. For streaming and calls, follow the guide to sending your OBS scene to other apps. OBS Virtual Camera guide

When you finish, stop the OBS output you used and click End session in the workspace to end AI generation.
